UI language versus document language
Vendor copy talks about 13 languages on PC and 46 on mobile. Wikipedia lists English, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Malay, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese among others. Switching the ribbon to French does not install Arabic fonts. Set the proofing language on the text, not just the UI.
Fonts
Install a real Naskh or Noto Naskh Arabic before you type Arabic. Install a CJK font before you paste a Chinese abstract. Linux users also need Windows symbol fonts for equations — that is a different problem, covered in Linux fonts. Calibri/Arial will silently substitute and then look “broken” on the recipient’s PC.
Right-to-left
Writer handles RTL for Arabic and Hebrew on current desktop builds well enough for letters and homework. Mixed LTR quotes inside an Arabic paragraph still need care (Unicode bidi marks, not a row of spaces). If a ministry template is a locked Word form with ActiveX, finish it in Word.
CSV and mail merge
CSV saved as “Excel ANSI” will mojibake names. Use XLSX, or CSV UTF-8. Test three rows. Mail merge.
Spellcheck that does nothing
If every word is underlined or none are, the proofing language on the style is wrong. Select the document, set the language, download the dictionary if the build asks. Do this once per language you actually write — not after the thesis is due.
Campus and office politics
A department that mandates Times New Roman 12 does not care that your WPS UI is in Portuguese. Follow the call for papers. Students · formats.
